lp 7 MAY 07 Plaint of 190 odd Chinese in the employ of the Ger-

mans, living in the Shalofaka Shed in San Pui,

80 11 from the Port.

Petitioners came to Samoa on the fair words of

the man inviting people to come; but since their

arrival at the Port, they have never had any rest.

They work over the contracted time. The food is

poor and they are usually confined and beaten. These

even are trifling in comparison with the hostility

of the Chinese overseer who, in less than half a

year, has done 5 men to death and whose extortion iɛ

unbearable.

Petitioners only receive $3.00 a month.

having been too hardly pressed, they joined in a

plot to murder him in summer last year, and a man

named Sam Chung was taken as the murderer and would

have been hanged but for the joint appeal of peti-

tioners and he was then sentenced to be imprisoned

for several years. This occurrence did not give any

warning to the master who still continues his atroc-
